The Rising Demand for Supply Chain Skills in World-Class Manufacturing

Introduction by Emma Brighouse, Director, Morgan Ryder

"Over the past 24 years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the evolution—and revolution—of supply chain roles within world-class manufacturing and third-party logistics. What was once viewed as a behind-the-scenes function has transformed into a critical pillar of business strategy. Today, supply chain professionals are not only in high demand but are also driving innovation, sustainability, and resilience in a rapidly changing global marketplace. Whether it’s through the integration of cutting-edge technologies or the growing focus on agile and sustainable operations, the need for skilled talent across logistics, procurement, planning, and more has never been greater."

A Surge in Employment Across Supply Chain Functions

Recent data highlights the expanding workforce within the supply chain sector. According to a 2024 report by the Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM), there were over 6 million supply chain-related jobs in the United States alone, marking a 15% increase over the past five years. Globally, estimates suggest more than 60 million professionals are employed in supply chain functions, particularly in manufacturing hubs across North America, Europe, and Asia.

In the United Kingdom, the demand mirrors this global trend. The UK logistics and supply chain sector currently employs over 1.7 million people, according to Logistics UK, making it one of the largest employment sectors in the country. This figure includes roles across warehousing, transport, procurement, and planning, with employment levels continuing to grow due to the rise in e-commerce, the onshoring of manufacturing, and increased emphasis on supply chain resilience.

This rapid growth—both in the US and the UK—is driven by globalisation, increased supply chain complexity, and the heightened need for agility and resilience in a post-pandemic world. Companies are now viewing supply chain capabilities as essential to competitive advantage, which is accelerating the need for experienced professionals and new talent entering the field.

The Expanding Range of Supply Chain Skills

Supply chain roles span a diverse and evolving range of skills and specialisms, including:

  • Logistics: Transport management, fleet operations, and distribution networks.
  • Warehousing: Stock control, automation in storage, and order fulfilment.
  • Production Planning: Aligning manufacturing schedules with demand forecasts to optimise efficiency.
  • Procurement: Strategic sourcing, supplier management, and contract negotiation.
  • Demand Planning: Forecasting and analytics to align supply with market needs.

As supply chains become more integrated and technology-driven, technical proficiency, data analysis, problem-solving, adaptability, and cross-functional communication are also increasingly critical.

Technology Driving Transformation

The adoption of new technologies is reshaping supply chain operations, requiring professionals to adapt and acquire new technical competencies. Key innovations include:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Machine Learning: Enhancing demand forecasting, route optimisation, and autonomous decision-making.
  • IoT (Internet of Things): Enabling real-time tracking of assets and predictive maintenance.
  • Blockchain: Improving transparency, security, and traceability across supply networks.
  • Robotic Process Automation (RPA): Automating repetitive administrative and operational tasks.
  • Digital Twins: Simulating supply chain processes to optimise performance and identify potential disruptions.

The rise of Supply Chain 4.0 is creating demand for professionals who can harness these tools to drive value and innovation.

Salary Trends Reflecting Rising Importance

Remuneration is keeping pace with demand, both in the US and the UK.

  • United States: The median salary for supply chain professionals reached $86,000 in 2024, with top roles such as Supply Chain Managers or Directors earning between $120,000 and $150,000 per annum. Entry- to mid-level roles in logistics, procurement, and planning typically range from $60,000 to $100,000.
  • United Kingdom: In the UK, supply chain salaries are also rising steadily. The average salary for supply chain professionals is around £45,000, with more experienced roles commanding between £60,000 and £80,000 per annum. Senior positions, such as Supply Chain Directors or Heads of Logistics, can earn £90,000 to £120,000 or more, especially within large manufacturing or third-party logistics firms. Entry-level roles, such as supply chain analysts or planners, generally start around £28,000 to £35,000, depending on region and sector.

Additionally, professional qualifications—such as CIPS (Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply) or APICS/ASCM certifications like CSCP and CPIM—can increase earning potential by up to 20%, particularly in competitive markets.

Looking Ahead: A Strategic Role in Manufacturing’s Future

Supply chain professionals are no longer just operational players—they are strategic leaders essential to driving efficiency, sustainability, and growth. As manufacturers worldwide strive for agility and competitiveness, supply chain expertise is becoming one of the most sought-after assets in the talent market.

With ample opportunities, competitive pay, and the chance to work at the heart of global operations, the future is bright for supply chain professionals—and the demand is only set to grow.
